Google Talk Freezes with show music status using Winamp 5.5

I am a die hard fan of Winamp and using it for more than 5 years. What I like about this music tool is its light and easy to use features. When you compare other media players like iTunes and Jet Audio, Winamp uses a very light and easy to use playlist organizer. If you just want to hear mp3 songs then you can go with Winamp lite version which is not filled with bloats and add-ons.

Coming to the point, we know very well about the famous Google talk’s “show my current music status” and might be using it without any problem in Winamp although WMP needs an in activation. But after installing the latest version of Winamp 5.5, I had a few problems with the Google talk Integration.

Whenever you select the Show my current music track, Google talk either freezes or stops responding. This is actually a technical issue with Google talk or Winamp which is yet to be discovered but many users who have upgraded to Winamp 5.5 are facing this problem, so one of a guy has posted a simple resolution for fixing this bug.

The solution is:

Step 1: Go to the root directory of Winamp which is usually in C:\Program Files\Winamp\

Step 2: Select Tools->Folder Options->View (Tab) and uncheck the hide extensions for known file types and click Ok.

Step 3: Now create an empty file (Right click the mouse -> New -> Text document), so the default file would be like “New Text Document.txt”.

Step4: Rename the above file to “winamp.m3u” and save.

Step5: Close Winamp and Google Talk. Now open again and Your Show Current music track status should work like a charm 

Google Talk has been causing a lot of problems lately for me, it won’t open links when I click on them from the chat window.

I’ve to manually copy and paste How frustrating.

I hope they’ll release an update with new features, still maintaining the minimalistic appeal

hey gtalk is a very simple messenger ~~~it has a very simple appereance~~~its set up file is less than 2 mb~~~so plzz dont compare it with other messy like yahoo or msn~~~however voice quality of gtalk is unmatched

Dude it totally works. Freakin awesome. Although for Vista users the instructions should go a little more specific. Like they may have to create the file on their desktop (like I did since it wouldn’t allow me to save directly) then move it over to the location you specified.
but yes, it definitely works no doubt.

No more crashes on showing my music track.

Actually, vista users can just rename the “whatsnew” notepad file that already exists in the winamp folder. Thanks, that was a great solution to a frustrating problem. <3

i’ve tried the suggested advice and it didn’t help, gtalk still freezes as soon as i try to change the status mssg to show current music track..
any other suggestions, except creating that file?

I am still trying to fix this problem.
First of all I’ve windows vista on my laptop and when I click on C:/program files/winamp, there is no “tools” option on that page? What is this tool option?

U know why???
Becoz
Older version had the “winamp.m3u”
file that has the current track entry and that what googletalk finds to show its status….

Aakanksha – i had the same problem, but that’s because i didn’t have the file typed in correctly…the organized drop down will let you go into folder options…then follow the directions
